Description

From the Hohe Tauern mountains to the Mozart City Salzburg, following the Salzach river and the Inn river to Passau, leading you on bike paths and roads with little traffic through the picturesque scenery of the province of Salzburg, passing many historic and natural points of interest along the way.

The Tauern bike path follows the course of the Salzach river, so you need not be afraid of heights. Although the path is surrounded by the highest mountains of the region, it travels predominantly through flat terrain or rolling hills. Actually, it goes slightly downhill most of the time, since the entire stretch from Krimml to Passau has a vertical drop of 700 meters (about 2,200 feet).

Mostly on cycle-paths, country lanes and a few side roads.

Daily Program

1st Day: Journey to Krimml or Wald near Krimml
Direct journey to Krimml or Wald.

2nd Day: Krimml/Wald - Piesendorf/Zell am See (approx. 57 km/36 miles)
You cycle through the Rosental to Neukirchen where you can visit a little museum named “Kammerlanderstall”. Following on the direction to the Habachtal, which is famous for its mines of emeralds, you reach Bramberg and Mittersill, also well-known for their museums in country style. In the afternoon you come to the Europe-Sport-Region Kaprun/Zell and see the famous power plants in the Kaprun valley.

3rd Day: Piesendorf/Zell am See - St Johann/Bischofshofen (approx. 58 km/36 miles)
Passing Bruck, the starting point of the world famous high alpine road to the Großglockner, you come to Taxenbach and Lend. From here the street leads to the Gasteiner-Valley. In the afternoon you reach St. Johann or Bischofshofen.

4th Day: St Johann/Bischofshofen - Salzburg (approx. 57 km/36 miles)
In the village of Werfen you can visit the fortress of Hohenwerfen. You then have to “climb” a little hill to the Paß Lueg with a nice guesthouse for your lunchtime. On a downhill, you reach Golling and Hallein, famous for its salt mines and the Celtic museum on the Dürrnberg. From here it is not far to the city of Salzburg.

5th Day: Salzburg
Day at leisure to explore Salzburg.

6th Day: Salzburg - Burghausen (approx. 55 km/34 miles)
Following the course of the Salzach river, crossing fields and meadows, you soon arrive in Oberndorf. It was here in 1818 where the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” was performed for the first time. The little “Holy Night Chapel” still gives evidence of this memorial event. Continuing on, you come to Burghausen with its imposing castle and the longest most extended European fortress.

7th Day: Burghausen - Schärding (approx. 68 km/42 miles)
Passing by the point where the Salzach river flows into the Inn river you arrive at Braunau, the largest city of the Inn region. Following the Inn river on a narrow path and crossing through meadows and fields, you reach the thousand-year-old town Obernberg. The remarkable market square is lined with interesting old houses which still retain rococo style. Soon you arrive at Reichersberg with its monastery, seat of the Augustinian monks for more than 900 years. Following the embankment of the river Inn you reach Schärding after 17 kilometers.

8th Day: Schärding - Passau - Schärding (approx. 34 km/21 miles)
On your last bike day you have the possibility to visit Passau, formerly a very important bishop city. You go across Wernstein following the Inn river to Passau. After an individual sightseeing tour you go back to Schärding. If you prefer not to cycle on the last day, we recommend you go via Passau for finishing the tour with a sightseeing tour.
