Along the Danube in the Heart of Austria-Hungary Vienna to Budapest (Guided) |
|
|
The tour from Vienna to Budapest is very diverse, and at its high points, majestic. Your tour starts in Vienna, the world’s city of charm. Europe’s youngest capital, Bratislava, invites you to take shopping tours in the picturesque old part of town. The Basilica in Esztergom is the greatest church in Hungary and accommodates many art treasures. The metropolis, Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, is the crowning conclusion of your journey.
This guided tour offers a natural and cultural experience mostly away from the touristic centers. Untouched nature, little-known artistic treasures and cultural monuments are on this route between Vienna and Budapest. You cycle in the infinite widths of the Hungarian lowlands. Enjoy the friendly people and the Hungarian hospitality.
The tour is mostly flat, sometimes lightly hilly. The Austrian section is on well equipped bike paths, in Hungary you will bike on country roads and side roads. Entering and exiting the cities, there is some traffic to be careful of!
Route:
In Hungary most of the time we cycle on byroads, some parts on mainroads. The tour goes on ground level. Except the part from Tata to Esztergom has two grades of every 3 km.
Distance: approx. 343 km
Visa requirements:
Our guests from Great Britain, USA and Canada need only a valid passport for visiting Slovakia and Hungary. Clients from Australia need additionally a visa for Hungary. For Slovakia a valid passport is sufficient.

Day 1: Vienna
Individual arrival to the capital of Austria, welcome by the tour guide and dinner. Overnight in Vienna.
Day 2: Vienna – Bad Deutsch Altenburg/Petronell-Carnuntum (approx. 54 km, 34 miles)
After taking over the bikes, we leave Vienna. On the dam of Hubertus we cycle via Eckertsau, which has a baroque hunting lodge, to Bad Deutsch Altenburg. In the evening we have the possibility of taking a trip to the excavations of the ancient Roman camp, Carnuntum. Overnight in Bad Deutsch Altenburg or Petronell-Carnuntum.
Day 3: Bad Deutsch Altenburg/Petronell-Carnuntum – Mosonmagyarovar (approx. 60 km, 38 miles)
First, we ride along the southern side of the Danube to the Austrian-Slovakian border. Now we get an impression of this little country. Near Rajka we enter Hungary and arrive in Mosonmagyarovar, also called "The Town with 17 Bridges."
Day 4: Mosonmagyarovar – Györ (approx. 45 km, (28 miles)
We cycle through numerous little villages before we come to Györ. Györ has a lot of attractions. The medieval town center is located by the confluence of Raab and Mosoni-Duna. Worth seeing are the Bishops castle with the Gothic Doczy-Kapelle, the cathedral with a bust of St. Ladislaus from the 15th century and the city hall.
Day 5: Györ – Tata (approx. 58 km, 37 miles)
We leave Györ through the suburbs and go on cycling through the lowland in the hill country of Transdanubien. Via Babolna and Kocs, we come to Tata. Here we can walk around the idyllic old lake with the moated castle from the 15th century. Overnight in Tata or in Tatabánya.
Day 6: Tata – Esztergom train ride, then cycle (approx. 56 km, 35 miles by bike)
Today we cycle the only hilly part of the tour. The departure from Tata has more hilly parts and bad streets with traffic. So we recommend a train ride on the first 18 km (to organize by yourself but the guide will assist, connections every hour, approx. €1.50 per person + approx. €1.00 per bike, payable on site). We then cycle up a hill and come back to the Danube after some beautiful departures between vineyards near Tát. After that we arrive in Esztergom.
Day 7: Esztergom – Budapest (approx. 69 km, 43 miles)
The last day begins with a look at the basilica of Esztergom, the biggest and most impressive church of Hungary. We leave the town and cycle to the traditional small town, Visegrad, where we see the ruins of the renaissance castle by Matthias Corvinus. We change the bank and ride along the isle Szentendre until a ferry brings us back to the southern bank into the village with the same name, Szentendre. There, you can see a lot of small galleries and studios. Now, Budapest is not far away. We have chosen a nice hotel in the centre of Budapest, which is easy to reach with the bike.
Day 8: Budapest
After a city sightseeing tour in the morning our journey ends.
