This 8-day/7-night Medieval Villages cycling tour is a perfect way to explore the quieter and less travelled areas of this fascinating region of Catalonia, Spain.
Our tour starts in Girona city and winds its way gently through the undulating and ever-changing scenery of the Baix Emporda region and along the Costa Brava. All of the cycling takes place on quiet country roads that are part of the Baix Emporda Cycle Network. The network has been developed to allow cyclists to fully enjoy the splendors of this area.
The tour follows the cycling network for 6 nights and finishes with a final night in Girona city. Our luggage will be transported from hotel to hotel so we can relax and enjoy the cycling to its fullest. We'll be staying in 3- and 4-star hotels, including breakfast each morning and six dinners.
Each day we will explore the beautiful scenery and cycle the selected highlights of the well-sign-posted Cycle Network. Additionally, we will cycle a variety of stunning rides that will clearly explain why this area of Europe is renowned as a cyclist’s paradise!
We stay Days 3 and 4 in one hotel and Days 5 and 6 in a second hotel, which means you can even take two days off from cycling if you'd like. If you don't want to ride on a given day, there are plenty of beautiful walking options around the villages where the hotels are located. If you would prefer to travel in a vehicle to the next hotel rather than riding, this can also be easily arranged. There is no ongoing support van traveling with us, but arrangements can be made for a pick-up, in the event you tire -- unlikely since each day's "base" riding is relatively short with longer options.
We'll have ride-along guides, but you can also ride independently using the detailed maps and route notes. Many clients do this route on a self-guided basis.
Terrain and route
The Medieval Villages route starts from Girona city to Sant Feliu de Guixols by the Mediterranean Sea along the "Carrilet" - the old converted railway that is now a dedicated dual use cycle and walk way. The surface is a hard packed gravel surface with a very easy gradient. The rest of the tour follows the well marked "Baix Emporda Cycle Network" that utilizes quiet country lanes and back roads that are almost completely free from traffic. The road surfaces are a mix of hard packed gravel and tarmac.
The Medieval Villages tour is within the reach of almost all cycling abilities. In addition, it is a beautiful route that encompasses spending time to explore Girona city, being by the Mediterranean Sea as well as cycling through the timeless Medieval Villages of the Baix Emporda region of Catalonia, Spain.
