Vineyards along the Neckar and Rhine Heidelberg-Strasbourg |
|
|
Taking advantage of the mild climate, this cycling tour touches three very different regions of Europe – Pfalz, Baden, Alsace. Seen from the points of history and climate the regions share one thing – the wine-growing. Culinary speaking you find a great variety.
During this trip lovely countryside interchanges with cultural highlights. How did the Romans bring the wine-growing culture into this region? What testimonies did the German Emperors leave in Worms, Speyer and Strasbourg? These are only some of the questions which will be answered during the tour. Look forward to a great ambiance, many well-being facilities and a very diverting tour.
Tour Character:
The routes along the Rhine and Neckar run completely in the plane and without any ascents. A few hills exist on the German Wine-Street. We planned the tour course in such a way, that hilly parts interchange with flat parts. The Alsace is known to be hilly. However, non-experienced cyclists can tackle this route.
For groups of 6 persons special dates are possible.

Day 1: Heidelberg
Individual arrival. Tour information and handing over of the bicycles. Enough time remains for an evening stroll to the famous castle of Heidelberg, down to the banks of the river Neckar and the bridges and through the idyllic old university town.
Day 2: Heidelberg – Worms (approx 45 km, 28 miles)
You bike along the river Neckar to the old roman town Ladenburg, with its very beautiful and historic old town. Through the Rhine-plane you directly arrive at the old imperial town of Worms. The cathedral of Worms from the 12th century as well as the old town, the old fortification walls, the Martin Luther Monument and the oldest well-preserved Jewish cemetery should not be missed.
Day 3: Worms – Bad Dürkheim (approx 45 km, 28 miles)
The day starts on the banks of the Rhine and goes on to the northern part of the German Wine-route. Through almost endless vineyards you visit lovely wine-growing villages, offering quality wines directly from the grower. Further on the route leads to Freinsheim with its beautiful medieval center and the old fortifications. Today’s destination is the health-spa town Bad Dürkheim with the biggest wine-barrel of the world. The health-spa offers a variety of well-being facilities at the disposal of our guests.
Day 4: Bad Dürkheim – Germersheim (approx 70 km, 44 miles)
Through Deidesheim (medieval town hall) you bike to the secret wine capital Neustadt (collegiate church, town hall, town hall market). You leave the vineyards and cycle through the Rhine-planes to Speyer. Enjoy the old town; visit the cathedral and maybe also the historical museum (cathedral treasure, wine-growing museum). On the banks of the Rhine you travel through the nature-reserve of the Old Rhine to Germersheim, the historic fortification.
Day 5: Germersheim – Bad Bergzabern (approx 50 km, 31 miles)
You cross the important nature-reserve of the Hördter Rhine-meadows and big tobacco growing areas; again you reach wine-growing areas. Because of the lovely climate and the special ambiance, this region also is named the “German Tuscany”. Get to know the changing German-French history in Landau and enjoy the amazing views of the vineyards. A detour to the Landeck fortification and the Klingenmunster monastery can be recommended.
Day 6: Bad Bergzabern – Rastatt (approx 65 km, 41 miles)
Only a few kilometers south from Bad Bergzabern the total 85 km of the German Wine-route come to an end. You cross the German Wine Gateway in Schweigen and then you are in the Alsace. In Wissembourg you visit the historical old town and cycle on the banks of the idyllic Lauter. After Lauterbourg you leave the Alsace and cycle on to Baden until you reach today’s destination Rastatt.
Day 7: Rastatt – Strasbourg (approx 60 km, 38 miles)
You bike through the soft Rhine-planes directly to the Rhine. The charming meadow landscapes are very idyllic. After crossing the Rhine you go on to the 2,000 years old artistic- and cultural town of Strasbourg. You can look forward to the unique town center with its Cathedral.
Day 8: Strasbourg
