Description

The archipelago of the southern Danish isles at the western edge of the Baltic sea offers both a splendid insight view to traditional Scandinavian life and gorgeous biking routes near to the sea shore and through the lovely landscape of the islands. Colourful painted are the small houses within the well-groomed villages, every Whitsun the paint has to be renewed according to the habit.

The way leads to plenty of castles and manor houses built in the typical brick style. Mostly they are still owned by aristocratic families which run their grain-oriented agricultural enterprises for centuries. We mainly use their paved access roads to the rape and wheat meadows for biking. It all sounds a bit like in a fairy tale, and so it is matching well that we will visit the city of Odense, the birthplace of the worldfamous writer Hans Christian Andersen.

This magnificent route also includes daily lunch picnics out in the open, except of the first day. If required, you can take an individual day off both on Wednesday or Friday.

Daily Program

Day 1 – Sunday (33 km/22 miles)
You will meet the tour guide and the rest of the group at Nykøbing station, located at the edge of the Danish island Falster. You can reach Nykøbing easily by train both from Copenhagen and Hamburg. In Nykøbing we take over the bikes and start our tour by turning into a seemingly never-ending blind alley. After a break at the romanesque church of Nørre Alslev we pass the impressive Sound of Storstrøm on a bridge of four kilometres length. Arrived in Vordingborg, we will visit the ruins of its medieval castle, once the residence of Danish kings and one of the biggest castles in Northern Europe. Dinner and overnight stay in **-hotel in Stubbekøbing.

Day 2 – Monday (58 km/39 miles)
The charming island of Møn is known for its spectacular chalk rocks at the eastern coast. Our route to Møn leads on a cycling path on a former railway track. Having crossed the bridge to Møn, the picnic in the pretty gardens of a historic four-winged farm building is reached soon. The way to Møns Klint passes the beautiful forest of Klinteskoven. After a walk to Dronningestolen and along the sea a coach will bring us to our cosy ****hotel in the vicinity of the old Næstved’s cathedral.

Day 3 – Tuesday (61 km/41 miles)
Starting directly from the hotel by bike, the southern coast of Denmark’s main island Sjælland will be dis-covered today. Of course we stop at the manor houses of Holsteinborg and Borreby as well as at the fas-cinating old churches of Ørslev and Skælskør. In the afternoon a break is planned for swimming in the Storebælt water. From the beach you can watch to the huge Storebælt bridge, with 14 kilometres length even longer than the Golden Gate bridge. You will be accommodated for two nights in the ****Nyborgstrand-Hotel, of which both the rooms and the restaurant offers a splendid view onto the sea.

Day 4 – Wednesday (50 km/33 miles)
On the way to Fyn’s capital Odense we come by the fishing village Kerteminde and the viking’s grave of Ladby. This interesting archeological sight is the only chieftain’s boat grave from Vikings time found so far in Denmark. Certainly a lunch picnic at the sea must not lack today as well before we will arrive in Odense, the birthplace of Denmark’s famous fairy tale writer. We will visit the H.C.Andersen museum, and the dome cathedral of the Holy Knud. Return to Nyborg by train.

Day 5 – Thursday (52 km/35 miles)
A delightful route follows the east coast of Fyn to the stunning brick castles of Holckenhavn and Hesse-lagergård. In the park of the latter we enjoy the picnic break and later you can test the Svendborg Sound for swimming. Svendborg itself is known as a lively sailor’s and fishermen’s town with excellent shopping facilities. Thus we try to arrive early in our centrally located ***hotel.

Day 6 – Friday (52 km/35 miles)
Shaped like a kidney, the gorgeous island of Ærø lies in the middle of what the Danish call their “South Sea”, an archipelago of hundreds of smaller and bigger islands. Ærø offers superb cycle routes with very few motorized traffic. After our morning tour along the south coast of Fyn we take the ferry from Fåborg to Søby on Ærø. Later we arrive in Ærø’s “capital”, Ærøskøbing. This small picturesque village looks rather like a museum of an ancient Danish town. You will have time to discover this amazingly nice place for your own, before the ship sails to the island Langeland. We are crossing Langeland and again we take a ferry to the island of Lolland, the 10th and the last one on our route. Back on the bikes we cycle to Nakskov (where one wonders about the old soviet submarine in the harbour) and our hotel.

Day 7 – Saturday (48 km/32 miles)
Today we cycle to the meadowlands in the south of the island. The last 20 kilometres you will bike an a levee directly on the shore of the Baltic sea. Often with tailwind, due to the eastern direction, this will be the unforgettable finish of your tour over the Danish isles. The tour ends in the early afternoon at the harbour of Rødbyhaven. You will have still time enough to reach either Hamburg or Copenhagen by train or car at the same evening.
