Welcome to Dalmatia, Mediterranean area of Croatia. This self guided bike tour combines great riding and enough time to chill out on amazing coast and beaches of islands Brac and Hvar. Start with your self guided bike tour in Split, with the main attraction of Diocletian’s palace (305.a.c.). Split is an administrative and cultural center of Dalmatian-coastal area of Croatia with a 1700 years old tradition, a variety of archaeological, historical and cultural monuments.
Great thing about the palace is that locals have their real homes molded in the old walls and old ladies stringing their washing where once affairs of state of the entire Roman Empire were once discussed. Split is a living and breathing urban oasis awash with a myriad of sights, sounds and smells, all thriving inside the two millennia old walls!
After the day in Split, you proceed with the ferry to the first island – Brac; third largest and the highest island in the Adriatic Sea. Brac is famous for fishing and agriculture, especially vines and olives, as well as its precious white stone which was used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split, the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest and The White house in Washington. Enjoy biking through the picturesque coastal fishermen villages and hinterland villages which were constructed in the Greek and Roman times, passing through many olive groves and vineyards. Visit one of the oldest stone mason schools in Europe, visit artist while creating stone sculptures, taste local vine and homemade food! Swim on Zlatni rat, one of the most beautiful beaches located in Bol.
From Brac, continue with the boat to Island Hvar and discover where Ancient Greeks settled in the 4th century BC. On the island Hvar, besides great biking, you will visit Stari Grad, literally Old Town, the oldest settlement on the island, and one of the first on all of the Adriatic islands. The town’s architecture is a complex of Greek walls, Roman Mosaics, the complex of streets built in the middle Ages... Scroll through beautiful town Hvar, with its seven centuries old walls and fortifications that became powerful in the middle Ages being an important port for the Venetian Republic.
This self guided bike tour includes the best and most beautiful highlights of the central Dalmatian Islands and town Split. Besides bike riding, where on most of the days you can choose your daily distance, we will suggest local wineries, local konoba – restaurant where you will be served homemade food, best beaches, art galleries, historical sites, night clubs, and all the other optional fun detours such as sea kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, stand up paddling and others that will make an unforgettable biking vacation!

Day 1: Split (optional/test bike ride, 12-50 miles/20-80 km)
Welcome to the ancient Mediterranean town Split. Explore 1700 years old Palace of Diocletian, inscribed into UNESCO World Heritage List, the Peristyle, Diocletian's mausoleum, Jupiter's temple, Romanesque houses, experience every day’s life, ancient fish market and fishermen.
Split is located in the middle of Croatian coast and is the administrative and cultural centre of Dalmatian-coastal area of Croatia. Cycle along the beautiful hill Marjan, main recreational venue for the citizens of Split. Depending on your arrival we will meet at your hotel, fit your bike and have a briefing regarding your cycling holidays!
Overnight in Split.
Day 2: West Side of Island Brac- Coastal Ride and Inland Ancient Towns (19 miles/30 km; 30 miles/48 km extra ride)
After a leisurely ferry cruise you arrive to the largest island of the Central Dalmatian group of islands, the third largest among the Adriatic islands - Brac. The island is rich with historic sites dating back to Ancient Greece, middle Ages and of course Modern times. Today, there are twenty-odd settlements on the island. Pedal to Sutivan, a fishermen settlement on the northern coast of Brac.
After Sutivan there is a climb and you pass through the picturesque village of Lozisca. Continue through the settlements in the interior, which are older, richer in cultural and historical monuments and much more interesting architecturally than the coastal ones.
Passing through Nerezica and Donji Humac, just before the last downhill to Supetar, we suggest a lunch break in a konoba which still makes traditional Mediterranean cuisine. If you are interested into the art, we will suggest a couple of galleries and workshops, where you can see the stone masons working and see their sculptures.
If you want to extend your ride go for a coffee in Milna village, see the beautiful naturally protected bay full of boats, yachts.
Overnight in Supetar, Island Brac.
Day 3: East Side of Island Brac- Visit Islands' Museum and Stone Cutting School (22 miles/36 km; extra ride 44 miles/70 km)
Today we suggest a ride to the east side of the island. Ride to Splitska, following a quieter road along the scenic north-east coast... You'll have views across to the mainland throughout the ride. Stop in the town of Skrip, the oldest settlement on the island. After the visit to The Island Museum, pedal to Postira, fishermen village and Lovrecina, sandy beach with ruins of a large early Christian basilica assigned to the 5th century. This might be a good swim break.
Continue to Pucisca, charming little town, well know for its stone quarries from where is cut its precious white stone which was used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split and The White House in Washington. You might wish to enter one of the oldest Stone Cutting Schools in Europe and see students carving in the same way as their well know ancestors.
Overnight in Supetar, Island Brac.
Day 4: Island Belvedere- Vidova Gora and Bol with its Famous Pebble Beach Zlatni Rat (23-31 miles/37-50 km)
Your route and goal today is to reach the island’s summit, Vidova Gora. This lookout is known as the summit of the Adriatic and offers some spectacular views. The highest peak of all Adriatic islands – Vidova Gora(778meters), from where you will have a breathless view on the slopes of the south side of the island, the town of Bol and the famous beach Golden Cape (Zlatni rat) as well as on the islands of Central Dalmatia. With high visibility even the Italian coast may be seen. Vidova gora hides many wonders of nature: from the dense forest of authentic black pine trees and its rich herbal and animal world to numerous caves and pits.
There is an easier option if you don’t feel like riding to highest point of the island. Continue with biking to Gornji Humac, where you should try some of original islands specialties, before having a great downhill to Bol, the oldest coastal town on the island Brac. Bol didn't take the usual position like other coastal towns in the amphitheatrically slopes of the protected bays, but it stands alone and separated on the southern, open part of the island, with the beaches connected like a necklace of pearls. You might wish to check the famous pebble beach Zlatni rat, one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia.
Overnight in Bol, Island Brac.
Day 5: Island Hvar- Coastal Rides and Beautiful Hidden Inland Villages, Lavender Fields and Town Hvar (19-28 miles/30-45 km)
Today you take a privately owned boat to cross the Hvar Channel to fishermen's village of Jelsa, Island Hvar. Riding on the island Hvar you will be passing among lavender fields, olive groves, and vineyards. You will be riding along the scenic and mostly flat road on the north side of the island, and passing Jelsa, Vrboska, reach Stari Grad-(literally old town) which is actually the oldest settlement on the island and one of the first ones in Europe, founded by the Ancient Greeks (Pharos).
After a few warm up miles, a challenging uphill climb waits for you, passing rosemary and lavender fields and ancient Greek walls. Enjoy the beautiful view from the top of the island before a great downhill to Hvar. You sleep tonight in Hvar town, and as it is was your last ride today why not have a few drinks in the ancient Piazza with a view of 7th century AD walls, Venetian loggia and the oldest municipal Theatre in Europe.
Overnight in Hvar town, Island Hvar.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TRANSFER FROM BOL TO JELSA (BRAC TO HVAR) TODAY IS REALIZED WITH SMALLER EXCURSION BOATS, WEATHER PERMITTING. IN CASE OF ROUGH SEA THE TRANSFER WILL NOT HAPPEN (FOR SAFETY REASONS) BUT MERIDIEN TEN WILL OF COURSE ORGANIZE AN ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION!
If it happens that you cannot take the boat ride to the island Hvar, usually we either wait until afternoon that the sea gets calmer, or if we know the sea state will remain unchanged, we organize a transfer via Supetar and Split, and then by ferry to Stari Grad and/or to Hvar. In such cases (very rare!) Day 5 will be a no biking day. For now it happened only once that we were not able to use this boat connection. Usually in summer (July-end of August) we have approx 5 bad weather days!
Day 6: End of Tour
Today your tour ends in town Hvar. We highly recommend extending your stay in Hvar, relaxing in the beautiful Venetian style piazza or take some adventure trips like sea kayaking, sailing to nearby islands. Anyway, thanks for joining us and we hope you had a good ride!
Mondays or Thursdays: May 15- Sep 30, 2012
If you are interested in other dates, send us an inquiry and we can see if possible. If you have a group of 5 or more participants, you can choose your own start date.
