With captain Klaas' "Flying Dutchman" or with the three mast barque "Artemis," we sail and cycle where the most favorable wind blows us. Fixed is only the area of destination: the islands of the Danish South Funen Archipelago (Dansk Sydhav) and the German coast of the Baltic Sea between Kiel and Maasholm. Everything else is determined by weather conditions and wind, so that in the end, no voyage is the same as the ones before.
On hoisting the sails, the crew needs our active help as they do for the preparations of meals and the washing up. However, nobody will be obliged to help; thus a relaxed and cool atmosphere can develop on board.
On the islands of Ærø, Langeland, Funen, Alsen and possibly Lolland as well as on the North-German Schleifjord or along the Kiel canal, we go for 6 cycling tours in a great, varied countryside performed by our tour guide. Along beautiful mansions, neat villages and reed-roofed farmhouses, we cycle in a usually even or hilly countryside. On our way, we discover prehistoric sepulchres, observe wild horses on Langeland, and pass by the world of fairytales that already inspired Hans Christian Andersen, or we can a break enjoying the world-famous Danish wafers.

Itinerary (on fair, favorable weather conditions)
Individual journey to the starting point by car to Kiel-Holtenau or by train to Kiel, from there a regular bus service - line 91 - takes you to Holtenau / Friedrichsort. Free parking lots are in direct nearness to the boat (Tiessenkai).
At 6 p.m., cabins of the Flying Dutchman or of the Artemis are ready to welcome you. In case of an earlier arrival, we take care of your luggage until check in time. Up to dinner time there is time to scout the area round Kiel-Holtenau; for this sightseeing tour you may already use your bike. As an alternative you may take a boat trip along the firth or sit in a snug café watching the boats on the Kiel canal passing by and enjoy the vivid harbor-atmosphere.
Before dinner the captain and our group leaders give us the most important pieces of information concerning the boat and our journey.
After a first night on board in our cozy cabins, we draw our attention to the weather and the wind. Is the wind favorable to a crossing or are chances of a cruise better in the afternoon? At the latest after breakfast the captain and the tour guide will inform us if we start the day with a cycling tour, e.g. to Strande, or with setting sails to damp or with a more favorable wind to the Isle of Ærø where, after our arrival, will be plenty of time for an eventful cycling tour.
After making up our mind, we start the first stage of our journey either by bike or by boat.
On board, there is now time for a short nautical introduction. A member of the crew will explain to us the particular sails and acquaint us with their names. It won't take long to learn that the "Fall" (naut.: jeer) is a rope with which a sail is set or struck and a "Schot" (naut.: sheet)is a rope which is used to operate particular sails. Together we afterwards hoist sails. The feeling of the ship more and more bending with the wind and the engine is finally switched off will be unforgettable as well as the spray and the waves whipping over deck in a storm.
On our cycle tours, the courier leads us to the most beautiful places and most memorable sights of the area round the harbors called at. The neat and awarded town of Ærøskøbing - generally entitled "place of fairytales" - counts among potential highlights of our journey as well as the visit of Kappeln, Faaborg, or Sønderborg.
In case of favourable winds "Valdemars Slot" and the mansion "Holstenshuus", two of the large estates, which were already visited by the famous poet Hans-Christian Andersen, will enrich the program of our tour.
No matter whether we see the wild horses on the isle of Langeland, the steep cliffs on Ærø, the endless poppy and marguerite meadows or the enchanted wood "Pipstorn" on Fünen, again and again nature keeps ready for us surprising perspectives and most spectacular views.
By bike, we go on a time travel and admire the nearly 1,000 hat-like hills, left by the last Ice Age on Langeland 15000 years ago. Prehistoric sepulchres and megalithic graves tell about people's lives 6000 years ago; everywhere we find hints of the Vikings who in the early Middle Ages were in control of a great part of Denmark and the Baltic sea.
Wherever we are taken by the wind during this week on the "Flying Dutchman" or on the "Artemis," we will experience and see a lot. The unique combination of sailing and cycling and the warm being together in cooperation on board the boat makes each particular journey a unique and special one.
Variations
Due to diverse wind and weather conditions and the idea to set the sails whenever possible, the course of the particular voyage is not predictable.Only the destination is fixed by the German coast of the Baltic Sea and the islands of the Danish South Funen Archipelago. We always look for a fair balance between cycling and sailing – however, depending on wind and distance, even a full day of sailing is possible; this we try to compensate by a full day of cycling.

Our ships
Most of our ships are traditional motor powered sailing yachts. They are not luxury steamers, but rather boats with a lot of charm and style. Their owners who frequently also captain the boats at the same time may have completed some additional modifications to their ships over the winter. That is why the descriptions of the boats may no longer be completely accurate.
If for whatever reason one of the ships we chartered would be cancelled due to unexpected circumstances Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH will arrange a worthy replacement and will duly inform the participants about this change. You will find the name of your ship on your booking confirmation.
The ship Flying Dutchman (shower/toilet in each cabin, air conditioning in saloon and cabins)
The Flying Dutchman is the first ship of our fleet which was conceived as real sailing boat. The 127 ft. long and 21 ft. wide high sea two master set sails in 1903. During this time, it was used as herring lugger. The alteration for tourist purposes was done during winter 2004. It was important to keep the atmosphere of a sailing boat from the good old times. The comfort for guests was another important topic as well as a comprehensive and top quality security and navigation system/technique- so that the Flying Dutchman was finally able to get a permission to operate world wide journeys.
Sailing with the Flying Dutchman is a real sailing experience. During the renovation, the rig was improved and allows a speed of 14 knots with hoisted sails. Not surprising that the Flying Dutchman is always in front during a regatta. Captain Klaas and his crew are looking forward to set sails with your help. His biggest wish is to inspire you with his sailing cruise. No need for precognition. With guidance of captain and crew everyone will be able to hoist the sails.
Premium boat Artemis (shower/toilet in each cabin)
The 193 feet (59 m) long and 22 feet (7 m) wide three mast barque Artemis – named after the Roman godess of hunting – was built in Norway in 1926 and sailed for many years as a freighter. In 2001 the boat was transfor-med into an elegant sailing ship for cruises with an impressive sail surface of 11,300 square feet (1,050 square meters). The ship now has 14 comfortable guest cabins with shower and toilet as well as a cozy saloon. The Artemis satisfies even the most demanding guests with her excellent sailing qualities and her unique combination of sailing tradition and modern comfort.
The cabins
The cabins are equipped simply and functionally and have private baths with shower and toilet on all of our boats. There is enough space for sleeping and storing your luggage. There are cabins with 2 beds (bunk beds) and 4 beds (2 bunk beds) - those are available for either 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.
Due to the shape of the ship's hull, the size of the cabins may vary. Price differentiations are only made with respect to "above deck" and "below deck" cabins. Cabin allotments are the responsibility of the tour operator and cannot be influenced by guests or tour guides.
Bed sheets and towels are available; please bring your own beach towel though.
Cabin service
There is a daily cabin service on board which takes place during the bicycle tours. It includes the cleaning of floor and bath as well as the bedding (personal belongings should be removed). The towels will be changed once in the middle of the week.
Electricity and water on board
Electricity and water are of course provided on board for 24 hours but not in unlimited amounts. The water tanks are filled according to the number of people on board. There is enough water available for washing and showers even if the tanks cannot be refilled for several days. However, we presuppose that all passengers use this valuable resource sparingly. The ships also use a central heater for the showers. This also means that there is only enough warm water if people use the showers only for as long as it is really necessary (for example: turn off the water while soaping up).
The boat uses a generator. Most of the ports will also have an electricity connection for the ship.
The power supply on board is accessible with Euro-wall-sockets (as customary in Germany). Guests from UK and other countries with different socket systems are kindly requested to bring their own appropriate adaptors.
Sleeping on deck
Many guests feel that spending a night outside in the fresh air is a unique experience. There is enough space on the deck for that purpose. However you should bring your own sleeping bag and an insulated mat as it is not permitted to take the mattresses and sheets out of the cabins.
Catering on board
Meals included in the price of the tour consist of full board. The food served on board is typical local food and higher nutritional demands of bikers are taken into account. Breakfast on board generally includes at least bread, butter, cheese, ham, coffee and tea. For lunch the chef generally serves light fish dishes or vegetarian meals, the dinner will also include a desert.
If you wish to eat vegetarian food or have distinctly different eating habits please inform us in time before your arrival. Please keep in mind that special food requirements cannot always be met in all details.
If you have extensive food allergies we ask you to give us a list of the food that you can eat. This should be done before your arrival so that the cook can be instructed to plan and shop accordingly.
You do not have to make use of the full-board offered on the ship. Simply inform the chef or the tour guide of your intention of dining ashore.
Beverages
The saloon on the ship is a restaurant, lounge and bar in one. Here you can always get cool drinks – with or without alcohol. Generally, the crew keeps track of your drinks in a list that is tallied up for payment at the end of the trip. Naturally the drinks on board are slightly more expensive than in the supermarket around the corner, but, after all, you are in a small "floating restaurant." Just as in every bar or restaurant it is not allowed to bring your own drinks on board. For bottled mineral water (without fizz) a flat rate of 20,00 euros per person/week is charged. Children under 18 pay 10,00 euros per person/week. This flat rate includes all water consumed on board and on bike tours.

Cycling days are not too difficult. Tours are in generally flat stages of 10 to 38 miles on remote asphalt roads. In some places, even, unpaved country lanes are used. Main roads with traffic density but without cycleways are only used in short, exceptional cases. Long and steep ascents hardly ever occur, however, a hilly countryside with regular ups and downs must be considered. Depending on the wind direction, we must accept a strong headwind from time to time.
On our tours, you are required to wear a helmet (a limited number of helmets are available – reservation necessary). You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet. At any time a cycling tour can replace a boat trip or vice versa. The daily program is shaped by weather conditions and the relevant captain's decisions.
Only children in a good physical condition and of a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the bike tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 4 ft. 6 in.
This tour is rated Leisure and is for cyclists in average physical condition.

Participation
A vacation that involves exercise and physical activity requires greater commitment than a conventional package tour. It is your duty to make certain that you are up to the physical challenges of such a trip. The pre-condition for a bike-tour is that you are able to handle a bicycle in street traffic and on unpaved paths under any weather conditions. If you rent a bike, it is your responsibility to check the condition of the bike, particularly the brakes. You bear sole responsibility for adhering to all legal regulations at home and abroad, particularly regulations about travel documents and cross-border trade. When traveling across the exterior borders of the EU, your luggage must remain unlocked, to facilitate passage through customs. If your baggage is searched, you will be notified about it upon arrival at the destination. If problems with the procurement of the services occur, you are required to help within the scope of legal regulations, in order to avoid potential damages or keep them at a minimum and report any complaints to us immediately.
Duty of Care
During the duration of the trip, you are liable for damage to or loss of bicycles and any equipment entrusted to you. For guided tours, this is only valid if you have separated yourself from the group, have disobeyed instructions from the tour guides, or caused the damage or loss intentionally, through negligence or gross negligence.
Warranty
You can demand redress if the trip services are not rendered according to the contract. This can be solved by us providing compensation of equal or greater value. In the case of disproportionate effort, corrective action can be denied. For the period in which the services that have not been rendered according to contract, you can request a reduction in travel price after your return. The pre-condition for this is the immediate notification of our deficiencies or those of our tour guides, so that we have the opportunity to find a remedy. Tour guides are not authorized to recognize claims. Independent of a reduction in travel price, you can demand compensation due to non-compliance with the travel contract, unless we are not responsible for the defect.
Limitation of claim
Claims must be made in writing within one month of the contractual end of the trip. The statute of limitation for claims based on the contract expires six months after the contractual end of the trip. The statute of limitations for all claims of civil offence expires three years after the end of the trip.
