The Princely Palaces of Rajasthan
Land of the Maharajas
Tour Description: Guided
This classic Rajasthan cycling journey passes through some of the well-known erstwhile princely states, whose elaborate palaces and forts have now been converted into heritage hotels.
Mostly along the rural and rustic Rajasthan, the cycling route will be rugged, especially in Karauli and Ramathra where you will pass through deep gorges in the periphery of a game reserve. Towards the end you will climb up to the Araveli Hills as you reach Udaipur. You will experience rural Rajasthan firsthand and encounter pink- turbaned men, women carrying fodder in colourful skirts and camel carts plying along the highways.
Cyclists ride through the gorge-filled Daang plateau, stretching east to the Chambal River valley and as far as Ranthambhore to the south. Until recently, tigers roamed the area as did notorious bandits. Today, tigers are rare and the bandits only legendary, but visitors regularly see several varieties of deer, blue bulls, wolves jackals, hyenas and, if lucky, a wild boar, bear or leopard.
Though the entire state of Rajasthan is replete with fantastic hilltop fortresses, exotic fairytale palaces and gripping legends of medieval chivalry and heroism, no city is quite as romantic as Udaipur. 'The City of Lakes', as Udaipur is called, is one of the most sought after destinations in entire India for relaxing.

Daily Program: Guided
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive in Delhi today. Airport transfers will be provided to all participants. Please note hotel check-in time is 12 noon.
You can tour Delhi with its old and new sections — each with its specific charm and glory — making it a very interesting city for its sustenance to medieval and modern cultures at the same time and space. Old Delhi, built by Mughal Emperor Shahjehan in the 17th century, still retains its medieval character to a great extent and almost indubitably reminds one of the crowded old towns of the Middle East; while, New Delhi is like any other modern city with tall buildings and massive shopping complexes. Accommodation: The Oberoi; Included meals: None.
Overnight in Delhi.
Day 2: Delhi - Karauli
This morning we will board a train to Hindaun, followed by a drive to Karauli (1 hour). Train details will be advised closer to the date of travel.
The old, holy city of Karauli was officially founded in 1348 AD, however, legend has it that this princely state was established by Raja Bijal pal Jadon, the 88th descendent of Lord Krishna, as far back as 995 AD.
In the evening, we will explore the 500-year-old city palace full of frescos, fine stone carvings and paintings. Within the city palace is a famous lord Krishna temple (Madan Mohan ji) where we will attend an evening arti (religious ceremony) before returning to the hotel.
Accommodation: Bhanwar Vilas Palace; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch.
Overnight in Karauli.
Day 3: Karauli (18-25 miles/30-40 km)
iWe begin cycling today as we go for a loop ride with picnic lunch around Kaila Devi National Park. The park is a part of the Tiger Project and is a buffer zone to Ranthambore National park. The typical features of the sanctuary are numerous khos or deep gorges breaking the ground. We will also visit the villages located on natural habitat inside the sanctuary. On the way back we will stop at the beautiful Kaila Devi temple and see the 200 bed hospital run by the temple trust.
Accommodation: Bhanwar Vilas Palace; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch; Terrain: Stunning countryside dotted with small villages.
Overnight in Karauli.
Day 4: Karauli - Ramathra (28 miles/45 km)
After breakfast, we ride to Ramathra fort, a small fort-palace hotel in rural Rajasthan with breathtaking countryside and a lake teeming with birds. What distinguishes it from many other fort and palaces is its remoteness. The fort has a strong perimeter wall crowned with parapets and its ramparts offer spectacular views over the farmlands.
Accommodation: Ramathra Fort; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Terrain: Unspoilt countryside dotted with villages and surrounded by small hills
Overnight in Ramathra.
Day 5: Ramathra (25-31 miles/40-50 km)
We ride around one of the most stunning countryside to be found in Rajasthan – passing through lakes, quaint villages and wilderness of the Daang plateau. Enjoy a picnic lunch before heading back to the fort.
Ramathra is part of a green farming belt in the Kalisil River Valley. The Daang plateau, stretching east to the Chambal River valley and as far as Ranthambhore to the south, is filled with gorges. Until recently, tigers roamed the area as did notorious bandits. Today, tigers are rare and the bandits only legendary, but visitors regularly see several varieties of deer, blue bulls, wolves jackals, hyenas and, if lucky, a wild boar, bear or leopard.
Accommodation: Ramathra Fort; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner; Terrain: Stone plateau with valleys, jungles and great wilderness.
Overnight in Ramanthra.
Day 6: Ramathra - Ranthambore (37 miles/60 km)
Early this morning we ride through the country and through river Banas to Ranthambore National Park. Post lunch we go for a jeep safari inside the National Park to attempt catching a glimpse of the elusive tiger and other wildlife of the park.
Earlier the private hunting preserve of the Maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambore was once the scene of royal hunting parties.
Today, it is famous for its tigers and is one of the best places in the country to see these majestic predators in the wild. However, its royal heritage prevails and manifests itself in the picturesque ruins that dot the park. There are lake palaces, cenotaphs, old fortifications and a majestic thousand year old fort on a height overlooking the park.
At one time excessive trophy hunting nearly wiped out the tiger population in Ranthambore like other parts of the country. Fortunately, Ranthambore was selected as one of the sites of Tiger Project and, fortunately, the program has been highly successful and the tigers have returned.
Accommodation: Dev Vilas; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner; Terrain: Through jungles, valleys and wilderness on dirt road.
Overnight in Ranthambore.
Day 7: Ranthambore - Bundi (31 miles/50 km)
Post breakfast, we drive / cycle to Bundi through some beautiful villages and the Aravali hills. It is a scenic ash felt route, heading south west, going past fields and lakes.
Bundi is a former capital of a once princely state in Rajasthan that fills a narrow valley in the oldest hills of India, Aravalis. The town sits still and massed, spreading across the floor of the valley and straggling up the bare hills. In the evening we will walk up the fort using stone steps and ramps which were built for horsemen and chariots.
Accommodation: Bundi Vilas; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch. Terrain: Flat terrain, riding on state road.
Overnight in Bundi.
Day 8: Bundi - Bhainsrorgarh (25-31 miles/40-50 km)
After breakfast, we ride to Bhainsrorgarh - an 18th century fortified outpost of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar. It crowns a 200 feet rocky ridge overlooking the River Chambal. You will arrive at Bhainsrorgarh in time for lunch and would be at leisure for the rest of the day.
Accommodation: Bhainsrorgarh Fort; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch; Terrain: Through stunning countryside, last leg a bit of climb while passing through villages.
Overnight in Bhainsrorgarh.
Day 9: Bhainsrorgarh (25-31 miles/40-50 km)
Full day of cycling around the countryside of Bhainsrorgarh. You may cycle to the architecturally brilliant 9th century Baroli Temples; visit Hinglaj Garh Fort which has beautifully carved statues and a step well; or visit Mukundara National Park – all of these places are within cycling distance from Bhainsrorgarh. Lunch will be organised at a picnic site before you return to the fort.
Accommodation: Bhainsrorgarh Fort; Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch; Terrain: Through hills and valleys, jungles and ancient ruins.
Overnight in Bhainsrorgarh.
Day 10: Bhainsrorgarh - Udaipur
This morning we will drive to Udaipur. You will arrive in Udaipur around noon and will have leisure time for the rest of the day.
Though the entire state of Rajsthan is replete with fantastic hilltop fortresses, exotic fairytale palaces and gripping legends of medieval chivalry and heroism, no city is quite as romantic as Udaipur. 'The City of Lakes', as Udaipur is called, is one of the most sought after destinations in entire India for relaxing. The city has three huge lakes within its limits and a large number of palaces and other monuments worth visiting. It is surrounded by the ancient Aravali Mountains where wildlife still abounds.
Accommodation: Fatehgarh (supplement for Lake Palace is available on request); Included meals: Breakfast
Overnight in Udaipur.
Day 11: Udaipur
This morning you will be taken for a guided city tour of Udaipur city –including City Palace, Sahelion-ki-bari and Jagdish Temple.
The huge city palace, towering over the lake, is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. It is a blend of stern Rajput military architecture on the outside and lavish Mughal-inspired decorative art on the inside. Started by Maharana Udai Singh, the city's founder, the city palace is made up of at least four separate interconnecting palaces built over a period of nearly three centuries by successive maharanas. The main part of the palace is now preserved as a museum which houses interesting artifacts from the days of the royalty.
The beautiful gardens of Sahelion-ki-bari were laid out in the mid-18th century for a retinue of forty-eight young ladies-in-waiting that were sent to Udaipur as part of a princess's dowry. The gardens have beautiful lawns, lotus pools, marble pavilions and marble elephant-shaped fountains.
Situated close to the City Palace is Jagdish temple in Indo-Aryan style. It enshrines a black stone image of Lord Vishnu as Jagannath, the creator of the universe.
Accommodation: Fatehgarh (supplement for Lake Palace Hotel is available on request); Included meals: Breakfast, New Year Eve's Dinner.

Day 12: Udaipur - Onward Destination
