Day 1: Lake Bled
You will arrive in Bled, a world famous town on the shore of a beautiful glacial lake. Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular tourist attractions, featuring a unique island church sitting proudly in the middle of the lake, towering alpine mountains and a castle perched high on a cliff. One of Helia's representatives will meet you and take you for a welcome drink, deliver your information pack and ensure you have everything you need for your trip.
For the rest of the day you can choose between a number of leisure activities in Bled. Visit the island church and marvel at the ornate golden altar and ring the church bell and make a wish. Hike up to the castle for a spectacular view of the glacial valley. In the evening try the local speciality, cream cake, in one of the great little tea shops beside the lake, or sample the many bars and restaurants.
Overnight in Bled.
Day 2: Bled - Ribcev Laz (Bohinj Lake) (25 miles/40 km, cumulative climb of 2,300 ft/700 m)
Today begins with an uphill climb to Pokljuka high plateau. From here you can marvel at the stunning views before gliding down into the neighbouring Bohinj Valley, the jewel in the heart of the Triglav National Park. You will cycle through the many small alpine villages scattered across the valley until you reach the small settlement of Ribcev Laz (Fisherman’s Pass), lying next to the stunning Lake Bohinj.
Day 3: Bohinj - Tolmin (33 miles/52 km, cumulative climb 3,600 ft/1,100 m)
Today you bike along a valley route with some hilly sections. You will go partly by train through 4 mile (6 km) tunnel. A highlight of the day is the very narrow, canyon-like Baška grapa Valley. The day's final stop is Tolmin, where you can swim in the river if it is warm enough.
Overnight in Tolmin.
Day 4: Tolmin - Bovec (36 km/23 miles, cumulative climb 440 m)
From Tolmin you cycle towards Bovec along the Soca River, slowly climbing. Highlights of the day include the monuments of World War I fighting on the Isonzo front and the Museum of World War I in Kobarid.
Overnight in Bovec.
Day 5: Bovec (rest day)
Enjoy a free day in Bovec, the adrenaline capital of Slovenia. Spend the day relaxing in the city, take a white water rafting trip down Soca River or go by a cable car to Mt. Kanin, where you can cycle back down to the valley.
Overnight in Bovec.
Day 6: Bovec - Kranjska Gora (28 miles/45 km, cumulative climb 3,700 feet/1,140 m)
Today's cycling route heads back to the Gorenjska region. It first passes through the Upper Soca Valley of Trenta, before the high mountain pass of Vršic. The pass of Vršic is located at 5,280 feet (1,611 m) above sea level with a height difference of 3,600 ft (1,100 m) and 50 hairpin bends, making it a winner climb for every amateur touring cyclist (a lift is also available). Other highlights along the route include Trenta Valley and Triglav National Park's beautiful scenery and mountain peaks over 8,200 feet (2,500 m) high.
Overnight in Kranjska Gora.
Day 7: Kranjska Gora - Bled (24 miles/38 km, cumulative climb 430 feet/130 m)
The last day cycling takes you from Kranjska Gora back to Bled. A nice downhill ride with one pass of 150 m (500 ft). For your final day you will head back into the heart of the Triglav National Park. The route takes you alongside the Sava Dolinka River as it cuts its way south to join the Sava Bohinjka, where it becomes the Sava River, the longest in Slovenia.
From Mojstrana you will head into the Krma Valley. This lush green valley leads through a peaceful forest littered with World War II monuments and traditional farmhouses, one of which has been adapted into a museum. You can have lunch in the mountain hut at the foot of Triglav, the mightiest mountain in the Julian Alps, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery deep in the heart of this beautiful alpine landscape.
From here you will head through the Radovna Valley between the Pokljuka and Mezakla plateaus. As you exit the valley, take a short detour to the stunning Vintgar Gorge, carved 492 feet (150 m) deep into the mountains by the Radovna River. The gorge was discovered by chance by the town mayor in 1891, who then set to work building walkways to open the gorge to the public. Make sure to try the trout dinner at the entrance to the gorge before heading into Bled.
Overnight in Bled.
