Day 1: Arrival in Lake Bled
The tour begins in Bled, a world famous town on the shore of a beautiful glacial lake, defined by its unique island church and castle perched high on a cliff. You can choose between a number of leisure activities in Bled. Visit the island church and marvel at the ornate golden altar and ring the church bell and make a wish. You can also hike up to the castle for a spectacular view of the glacial valley. In the evening try the local speciality, cream cake, in one of the great little tea shops beside the lake, or sample the many bars and restaurants.
Day 2: Cycle around Bled (9 miles/15 km)
Today is a leisurely day of cycling around Lake Bled, serving as an introduction to the town that will serve as the base of your tour. You will visit the Island with the Virgin mary Church and castle set above the town. After the day of cycling, you will have more opportunity to tour Beld and visit its numerous places of interest.
Day 3: Bled - Bodesce - Kropa - Bled (21 miles/33 km)
Today's cycling is easy with a few relatively undemanding hills. As the sunlight floods over Lake Bled, you follow the Sava Bohinjka River and cycle the 2,400 feet (750 m) up to the Jelovica high plateau for a spectacular view of the entrance to the Triglav National Park.
Your route will then take you through the fascinating little village of Kropa, where you will find the iron forging museum dedicated to the history of the town’s blacksmith trade. You can even learn how to make your own nail, and ether add it to the current collection of over 100 types, or take it home with you. Visit the bee-keeping museum in Radovlijca, followed by lunch in an old fashioned restaurant next to the castle.
Day 4: Bled - Begunje - Radovljica - Bled (27 miles/43 km)
This flat route will take you out to the historic village of Begunje. It was in this small settlement, the hometown of the famous Slavko Avsenik/Oberkrainer band. A short distance down the road are the ruins of Kamen Castle. Another highlight is Vrba, the birthplace of many Slovenian poets and writers.
Day 5: Bled - Gorje (12 miles/19 km)
Today's route will have one gradual climb of 492 feet (150 m). The route will take you to the stunning Vintgar Gorge, carved hundreds of feet deep into the mountains by the Radovna River. The gorge was discovered by chance by the town mayor in 1891, who then set to work building walkways to open the gorge to the public. We recommend you try the trout dinner at the entrance to the gorge.
You then continue on to the equally breathtaking Pokljuka canyon, a world away from the tourist crowds. The Pokljuka Gorge was carved out 10,000 years ago at the eastern edge of the plateau. Here you can leave the bike for a while and take a stroll in the solitude of this ancient forest and fossilized ravine left behind by the retreating glacier.
Day 6: Bled - Bohinj (28 miles/44 km)
The day begins with a car transfer to the top of Pokljuka high plateau, where you start cycling for 12 miles (20 km) downhill to the Bohinj Valley, the jewel in the heart of the Triglav National Park. You will cycle through the many small alpine villages scattered across the valley, passing traditional farmhouses and the unique Slovene hayracks.
Wedged into the corner of this dead end valley, Bohinj is the largest and deepest lake in the national park and is surrounded by shimmering mountain peaks and densely forested hills. Cycle around the lake to Savica Waterfall, source of the Sava Bohinjka River, and then take the cable car up to Vogel Mountain for a spectacular view into the Bohinj Valley and of Mount Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps.
Day 7: Bled - Krma Valley (23 miles/36 km)
The last day of cycling is easy with a gentle climb through the valley. From Bled you will first cycle through the Radovna Valley, an untouched wilderness, before entering the Krma Valley. This valley leads through a peaceful forest littered with World War II monuments and traditional farmhouses, one of which has been adapted into a museum that was even visited by Prince Charles. You can have lunch in the mountain hut at the foot of Mount Triglav and enjoy the breathtaking scenery deep in the heart of this beautiful alpine landscape.
Day 8: Departure from Lake Bled
