Discover Thailand’s ancient cities as we cycle from the mountains of the north to the temple-filled plains of central Thailand. Cycling through these regions offers unforgettable scenery and cultural experiences - the famous Thai smile, quiet back roads and some of the world's best cuisine are just a few of the many attractions featured on this exciting road cycling tour from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.
Starting in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, we ride south along shady roads that lead to the historic city of Lampang. Here, our path becomes more secluded thanks to flanking paddy fields and ripe fruit orchids. These back roads through provincial Thailand eventually give way to the ruins of the former capital of Siam, Sukhothai.
Sukhothai was once a thriving religious and commercial centre during the 13th and 14th centuries. Its majestic architecture and exquisite ceramics are renowned by UNESCO, which put this "First Thai Kingdom" on its World Heritage Site in 1978. Cycling these ruins offers breathtaking views and impressive insights into Thai culture.
Charming rural roads lead us to another impressive UNESCO site: Khampeng Phet. Unknown to most tourists, this important archaeological site attests to the splendor of Thailand's "Golden Age." offering a relaxing, yet visually stimulating, cycling experience. The last leg of our bike trip is comprised of back roads through local communities to the historic Ayutthaya. After visiting its famous temples, we ride past Bang Pa-In, the former royal summer palace, before ending our journey in the north part of Bangkok.
This adventure is a historical ride through stunning ruins and scenery.

Day 1: Chiang Mai (18-31 miles/30-50 km)
We meet at 13:00 at the hotel where the guide will brief everyone thoroughly and make sure the bikes fit and enjoy Chiang Mai or go for a warm up ride in the area. Meals: D.
Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 2: Chiang Mai - Lampang (75 miles/120 km)
After we leave the Chiang Mai traffic we head towards Lampang on the old highway - a tree lined boulevard that is a real pleasure to ride along. The terrain is rolling on this section of the ride and at just past the halfway point there is a longish climb that gets quite steep at the end. Lampang is called the cowboy town – you can still see horse-drawn carriages as a means of transport. On the way, we’ll stop and visit the Elephant camp and one of the oldest and most religious Chedis in Thailand, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, built around 1044. Meals: BLD
Overnight in Lampang.
Day 3: Lampang - Uttaradit (90 miles/145 km)
Today is a tough day as we have a long distance to cover and some hills to go over. We have three sets of hills and lots of undulating countryside. Some of the hills get steep towards the end so take it easy – but the support vehicle is not far away and ready to give you a lift if needed. We pass through teak forests, past reclining Buddhas and some beautiful temples. We are now truly into provincial Thailand and we won’t see many other tourists here – giving you a real Thailand experience! Meals: BLD
Overnightin Uttaradit.
Day 4: Uttaradit - Sukhothai (56 miles/90 km)
We really head off the beaten track today as we ride on some of the most secluded and beautiful roads in Thailand as a canopy of palm trees provides some natural protection from the hot Thai sun. We pass lush green paddy fields and many villages as we wind head towards the first capital of Thailand, Sukhothai. The 13th Century reign is generally viewed as the “golden age” of Siam due to the fact that its influence spread as far west as Burma, east as far as Cambodia and south down into Malaysia. Meals: BLD
Overnight at Sukhothai.
Day 5: Sukhothai (19 miles/30km)
A day to enjoy the original capital of Thailand by taking a ride round the historic park. A UNESCO World Heritage site, there are more than 193 ruins surrounded by three moats and bridged by four gateways. Bikes are the best way to enjoy this ancient city and you won’t want to forget your camera to capture some of the stunning Buddha statues. Or simply have a day off the bike and enjoy the town of Sukhothai. Meals: BLD.
Overnight in Sukhothai.
Day 6: Sukhothai - Khampeng Phet (53 miles/85 km)
Khampeng Phet, also known as the “Diamond Wall City,” was a military fortress used to help defend Sukhothai from invading armies. The moss and flower covered ruins give it a quality that is not seen in its more popular and restored neighbor of Sukhothai. We have plenty of time to visit the sites by foot or by bicycle. The ride to Khampeng Phet is on pleasant country roads with plenty of activity going on to keep your attention. Meals: BLD
Overnight in Khampeng Phet.
Day 7: Khampeng Phet – Nakorn Sawan (103 miles/165 km)
We head into the heartland of Thailand today with our journey to Nakorn Sawan. You’ll quickly understand why Thailand is the top exporter of rice when you see the many paddies on your route today. Look out for water buffaloes wallowing in a puddle and for ducks taking a dip in a rice field. This is an area of Thailand which is not visited by many tourists, so you will pique the interest of locals (especially if you tell then you have ridden from Chiang Mai!) and it is a good opportunity to stop and say Sawadee! Our overnight is at a charming resort surrounded by lily pads. Meals: BLD.
Overnight in Nakorn Sawan.
Day 8: Nakorn Sawan – Singburi (68 miles/110 km)
Today we really start to feel we are approaching Bangkok as we see signs of industrialization, but there are still plenty of open spaces with fields as well as small towns and villages along the way. The ride is again on back roads that pass through many small towns. Don’t forget to look up and wonder at the 60-foot long reclining Buddha in Ang Thong. Meals: BLD.
Overnight in Singburi.
Day 9: Singburi - Ayutthaya (56 miles/90 km)
Today we reach the old Siamese capitol of Ayutthaya – the centre of old Siam for over 400 years until it was sacked by the Burmese in 1767. Also a UNESCO world heritage site, this historical park boasts some spectacular temples that are best visited by bicycle. The town lies along the Chao Phraya River and our hotel for the night is located on its banks. Meals: BLD
Overnight in Ayutthaya.
Day 10: Ayutthaya – Bang Pa-In – Bangkok (37 miles/60km)
Today we have the last leg of our sojourn through Thailand. We will ride down to Bangkok – along country roads that will take us past Bang Pa-In, the former summer palace of King Chulakorn. We end our journey in North Bangkok and we transfer the last few kilometers to our hotel in the city center. We then meet in the evening for a celebratory dinner and bask in the glory of a job well done! Meals: BLD
Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 11: Departure
Bangkok and onward travel. Free day to enjoy Bangkok and pack your bikes. Meals: B

The bikes are Trek 2.1 C road bikes with Shimano components and carbon forks and seat posts. If you have your own saddle that you are comfortable with you are welcome to bring it and we'll fit it. We can provide strap-style toe cages if requested, but you might like to consider bringing SPD clip pedals if you use them, and please bring your shoes and cleats. If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a road bike and that it is in good mechanical order.
Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.
Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended on all our biking adventures and if you choose not to wear one you will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Your guide is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

The total distance is just less than 1,000 kilometers in 10 riding days. This tour is 100 per cent on road and we have designed the route for cyclists to see the best of Thailand. We start in the north so there are a few climbs on the first two days as we go over the foothills surrounding Chiang Mai. The central part of Thailand is flat and after the third day we do not see any other hills.
We travel south and east as we ride from Chiang Mai down to the Sukhothai, Nakorn Sawan and Ayutthaya before ending in Bangkok. All our rides are point to point and there is only one transfer – to avoid the worst of Bangkok traffic. The riding days are not overly long and we don’t drag you out of bed at dawn. But we do ride every day and some of the rides are definitely tough.
The trip is fully supported and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit.
Fitness, of course, will be a huge asset, but as the tour is fully supported the bus is always close at hand. You can expect a few tough rides due to the daily distances - but they will all be on tarmac. There are some climbs in the first few days, after that the route is predominantly flat all the way to Bangkok.
This tour is rated Challenging and is for cyclists in above average physical condition.

The Thai currency is the baht. ATMs, which are abundant, are the easiest ways to get Thai baht. Have a supply of US dollars in cash on hand, just in case your card doesn’t work. Banks or the more rare private moneychangers offer the best foreign-exchange rates. Credit cards are accepted in big cities and resort hotels but you’ll need baht for family-run guesthouses or restaurants.

SpiceRoads endeavors to offer high-quality, educational, and adventure-filled itineraries that highlight and focus on the diversity of landscapes found in Asia and its people. As a specialized "niche" bicycle tour operator since 2000, we provide the most authentic, unique and exciting adventures in Asia.
The SpiceRoads family began back in the mid 1990s, when Hamish Keith was creating, operating and leading ground breaking cycle tours throughout Thailand and in emerging destinations such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar for well known companies such as Exodus Travels and World Expeditions and his own company the Wild Planet.
In 2000 Hamish decided to concentrate on what he loved doing the most and he established SpiceRoads as a specialist cycle tour operator in the region he knew best - Southeast Asia. The “niche” was to promote bicycle group tours directly to clients all around the world via the internet. Hamish set the standard for all subsequent SpiceRoads tours by offering a high quality tour - from customer service, to bicycles, to well researched routes to the guides we use – at a good value.
In 2002, when Hamish left to pursue other opportunities in the travel industry, Struan Robertson came on board, and with his skills in management, IT and of course cycling, the company has grown to encompass other Asian countries. During the years of growth what hasn't changed is the spirit of SpiceRoads, which is to offer professional, international standard cycle tours and services to independent travellers and cycle enthusiast looking to discover Asia by bicycle.
Our well-planned eye-opening cycling tours provide an active immersion into local cultures, languages, scenery and, of course, the most delicious of foods. By combining legendary service and rare opportunities for cultural experiences, our travel philosophy continues to excite, enthuse, and positively impact every guest. Take a look at our guestbook if you don't believe us!
SpiceRoads' staff and all of our professionally licensed multi-lingual tour guides are passionate about creating the best possible experiences, with fun, creativity, and total dedication to satisfaction.
We're always peddling towards making your tour perfect so you can See Asia by Bicycle!

Exceptions to this policy cannot be made for any reason, including weather or personal emergencies. Please note:
We strongly advise that clients have full personal travel insurance that covers for the refund of monies paid in case either party cancels the tour for any reason.
We regret that we cannot be held responsible for incidental/consequential costs or expenses you may incur as a result of any changes or cancellations. No compensation is payable for minor changes.
Any damages/injuries incurred that are attributable to your own actions, acts of some other party unconnected with the contract services or where the damage/injury results from events/circumstances which our outside our control and could not be reasonably foreseen.
For damages where SpiceRoads is responsible, our liability is strictly limited to twice the total price of the tour. In booking a tour with SpiceRoads you, the client, are agreeing to these terms and you accept this limit on our liability. This limit allows us to keep the prices of our tours as low as possible.
You must be in possession of a valid passport and all the visas and permits required for your tour. This includes any medical certificates that are required. The client accepts full responsibility for obtaining any and all such documentation. Every client is encouraged to contact the consulate/embassy for the countries they are traveling in respectively to receive the latest and most current information about their immigration / transit policies.
SpiceRoads does not accept responsibility if your documentation is not in order. Information provided by the company about these matters and other related items (clothing, baggage, climate etc.) is given in good faith but without responsibility on the part of the company.
For all tours (except short Thailand tours 4 days or less, see below):
SpiceRoads insists that all clients must take out good travel insurance before joining one of our tours. There are inherent risks involved in cycling and mountain biking and we will not be liable for your medical expenses or evacuation in case of an accident.
This insurance must include adequate coverage for any personal accident, medical expenses, injury, death and repatriation. Insurance should also provide coverage for cancellations or curtailment of the holiday. Clients should also ensure that there are no exclusion clauses limiting protection for any dangerous or unusual activities that might be included in their tour.
If you join the tour without adequate insurance you may be disallowed from continuing on the tour without the right of refund. Clients are solely responsible for arranging their own insurance and they should ensure that they are covered for the full duration of their tour. Your tour leader will ask for copies of your insurance before allowing you to join the tour. This protects both you and us.
In case of an accident, please consult with your tour leader or contact our reservation staff at +66(0) 89 895 5680 (24 hour hot line).
Upon signing up for a tour you must agree to accept the authority of the tour leader who is the representative of the company. The tour leader should be regarded as the same as a “ship’s captain” or an airline’s “Pilot.”
At all times the authority of your tour leader will be final when concerning matters likely to endanger your own health or safety or in regard to behavior or ill health that is causing or is likely to cause danger, distress or disturbance to the group and the well-being of the tour. Failure to abide by the authority of the tour leader could result in legal proceedings and the immediate termination of your participation in the tour without recourse.
In such circumstances we reserve the right to terminate all travel arrangements without liability on the part of the company. You must always comply with the local law, customs and drug regulations of the country/ies you are visiting. Failure to do so may lead to you being ordered to leave the tour without recourse to any refund or any legal claim against the company. In the case of ill health the company and its operators can make those arrangements that it sees fit and recover all monies paid from the client. The person who signs the booking form (which incorporates these conditions) warrants that he/she does so, with full authority on behalf of all those whose names appear thereon, and confirms thereby that all such persons accept and are fully aware of these conditions.
No refund will be given for non-utilized services, however if we are able to obtain a refund ourselves for these services we will endeavor to pass these on to the client less reasonable administration charges.
SpiceRoads pledges never to increase the tour price except under exceptional circumstances for those that have previously book the tour. Circumstances of this policy include: government action or legislation that directs the company to increase prices, exceptional and unfavorable changes in exchange rates that exceed a 20% fluctuation or currency devaluation.
Clients will be notified of any price increase at least 4 weeks before departure.
We will not accept any liability for any delay in your outward or inward flight/s, whether the cancellation or delay is caused by the weather, airline rescheduling, industrial action or mechanical failure. We will give no refunds or compensation for lost time and services from the itinerary.
Should you have a complaint while on tour, you must notify your guide, or the local operator, at the earliest opportunity, so that they can do what they can to immediately rectify it. Failure to do so will result in the limiting of a client's ability to claim compensation. If the problem is not brought to our attention we have no opportunity to rectify it. Any complaints should be sent to us in writing, or by email, not more than 28 days after the tour ends.
Complaints related to booking, inquires, billing, sales or operations should be directed to the Sales and Marketing Manager and/or the General Manager.
If there is anything else you need to know or want to hear in order to put your mind at rest, please do not hesitate to contact us.
