Passports, visas, and vaccinations
Vaccinations and health
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have information on vaccinations and preparation measures that are useful for travelers of all nationalities. The World Health Organization also offers detailed country-specific health information.
Anyone traveling to most parts of Asia and Africa should go to see their doctor for a check-up prior to the trip. Some countries will require specific vaccinations and your doctor will have access to the most up-to-date information about this.
Passports and visas
All of the destinations where we offer bike tours require passports for entry, though entry requirements vary by country and citizenship. A general requirement for Asian countries is that all passports must contain at least five blank pages and must be valid for six months after the completion of the trip. Visa requirements and fees vary widely from each country and you should check with your nearest consulate or embassy for official visa requirements in the country you intend to travel.
We recommend photocopying your passport and keeping the copy in a separate place (like a checked bag) in case your passport is lost or stolen. Or scan your passport and email it to yourself as an attachment (we’re pretty serious about packing light). Even if you lose your bags, you can still download it online. It's also helpful to have several passport photos with you in case you need to replace your passport.
Info for U.S. citizens
Get your passport in order well in advance of your trip – processing times are typically 4-6 weeks (with expedited service still 2-3 weeks). Fees are currently $135-165 for a new passport, and $25 less for renewals. Get started at the U.S. State Department website. Visas are not required for short visits to most countries, but a few countries require visas even for bike tourists! The State Department has a comprehensive listing of entry requirements for every country.
Info for non-U.S. citizens
Contact the embassy or consulate of your destination to get detailed entry requirements for citizens of your home country.
